Across the Lakes District, Real supports young people aged 12-20 and their families to build their ability to cope with life challenges and make positive decisions.
We have bases in Rotorua and Taupō, and work in community hubs in Reporoa, Mangakino and Turangi. We work closely with schools and health centres to support young people to:
- deal with things that are causing distress
- learn ways to continue dealing with intense emotions, social stressors and other things that ‘get in the way’ of day-to-day life – or reaching their potential
- build confidence, resilience and self-esteem
- strengthen their relationships with family, whānau, peers and their communities
- avoid disruption to achieving at school, work or in other important areas of life.
Our team includes local psychologists and youth workers who actively engage with young people in environments familiar to them. We believe in the positive power of friendship as a means to support young people to realise their potential.
How to get Real
Here are some ways to connect with our Real Lakes team –
At school: be put in contact with Real through your school’s guidance counsellors.
Health clinic: a doctor or a nurse at health clinics in the region can help you access Real services.
Rotovegas and Anamata Cafe in Rotorua: talk to the team at Rotovegas youth hub who can put young people in contact with us.
Real groups (Rotorua)
We run a variety of groups for young people in the Rotorua Lakes region. These groups are based in schools and aim to help young people to find support and build like-minded connections in a safe environment.
Below you will find the groups we are offering in Term 3, 2021. If you would like to attend one of these groups, please complete a referral form and send to firstname.lastname@example.org by midnight on Friday, 2 July.
For more information on our groups, or have any questions, please get in contact.
For those with social anxiety, aged 12–18-year-old.
This group looks at practical ways to conquer the social anxiety that has been holding you back.
Conquer is a fun and interactive group where young people follow Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based program and engage in different activities as a group and out in the community in a guided way.
For those suffering from low mood, aged 15-19 years old.
Stride is about taking life and feelings in your stride while getting active.
We use the Mind Over Mood® program for simple yet powerful steps that helps young people to overcome emotional distress and feel happier, calmer and more confident.
Getting active and outdoors is also a key part of each session as we know that exercise and nature help to boost mood.
Participants do not need to have a high level of fitness for this group just a willing attitude to get moving.
Group for Rainbow youth, aged 15-19 years old.
The aim of Diversi-tea is to facilitate a safe and inclusive environment that harnesses a sense of community and belonging for the young people who are part of the rainbow community.
Through connection and sharing of knowledge, we will foster a space where our young people can be exactly who they are regardless of where they are on their own personal journey.
This group aims to provide a supportive platform in which our young people can action what they feel is important to them by pursuing their own passions as well as creating positive experiences with mental health services.
If you would like to attend this group, please contact Rebecca directly at Rebecca.email@example.com. There is no need to complete a referral form first.
